Local cancer initiative One Step at a Time is celebrating a great win at the annual Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Awards.

The prestigious national awards recognise excellence in the sector each year.

Emerging triumphant in the Team of the Year category this year were Macmillan nurse Emma Harnett and her One Step at a Time team.

Established within the former West Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (now Hertforshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board) and Princess Alexandra Hospitals Trust, One Step at a Time (OSAAT) provides non-clinical information created by patients, for patients, and includes videos from survivors and carers which are translated into many languages and given out at diagnosis along with a pocket guide.

Emma, patient panel lead Ann Nutt and engagement expert Shahid Sardar, from the Trust in Harlow, started out to promote the patient voice in cancer care and improve services and OSAAT is now a ten-strong team.

Emma says winning the award is great recognition of the hard work of the entire team.

“The team is incredibly proud and grateful to have their work recognised and rewarded, despite working through the challenges of a pandemic to implement a new practice,” she adds.

Visit the RCN website for details of all this year’s winners and find out more about One Step at a Time.

Congratulations to Emma and the rest of the One Step at a Time team!
