Telling us about your experience as a patient

Contacting local NHS services with concerns and complaints

If you want to raise a concern about the health care provided to you or someone you know or look after, we encourage you to first speak to a doctor, nurse or manager involved in that care.

If you are not satisfied, or if you don’t feel comfortable raising your concern directly with the service, you can contact the organisation’s Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), also sometimes called Patient Experience team.

They can help you resolve your concerns quickly and without having to make a formal complaint They will also advise you on how to make a complaint if you wish to.

If you’re unsure which organisation provided your care, or if you want us to look into a concern or complaint on your behalf, please get in touch with the ICB’s Patient Experience Team. We will do what we can to help you.

You can contact our Patient Experience Team in the following ways.

If you want to register a formal complaint with the provider of the service, or with the ICB please do so as soon as possible and try to provide as much relevant information as you can.

Contact details for different services are provided below:

GPs, dentists, pharmacists, or opticians

If you want to make a complaint about a GP practice, dental practice, community pharmacy or optician, you should contact the service in question directly in the first instance.

If you are unable to resolve your complaint with service you can contact Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board as we commission these primary care services on behalf of patients locally. This means that we hold the contracts with these individual organisations. You can see the contact details for our Patient Experience team above.

Note: Changes on 1 July 2023

  • From 1 July 2023 the way members of the public make a complaint about primary care services to the commissioner is changing. Rather than contacting NHS England, complaints will be made to directly to the local integrated care board (ICB).
  • Members of the public will still be able to make a complaint to the provider. This is NOT changing.
  • Members of the public with ongoing complaints received on/after 1 July 2022 will receive a letter from NHS England informing them that the ICB is now handling their complaint with confirmation of their case handler.
