What we spend and how we spend it

The Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board (ICB) is responsible for commissioning the right services for the communities we serve.

From Friday 1 July 2022, the Integrated Care Board (ICB) is responsible for buying (commissioning) these services with a budget of around £2.8 billion to spend. This money comes from NHS England. It is used to serve almost all the health needs of people in Hertfordshire and West Essex.

The ICB wants to make sure the services we buy are of a high quality and offer value for money. What services are bought will depend on what each area within Hertfordshire and west Essex specifically needs. The ICB will work closely with place-based Health and Care Partnerships (HCP), where appropriate, to plan services around what is needed for the people living in a specific area.

Decisions about which services to commission will be made by the ICB, working closely with the HCPs, and will be based on the needs of the population not just in the immediate and medium term, but in the longer term.
